About The Artist
Hi, I’m Jasper. I make artisan kitchen knives and jewelry. I grew up in Livingston, Montana, where the Yellowstone River carves paradise through the Absoroka mountains. My start in the arts was very young, earlier than I can remember, following in the footsteps of my dad, trying to capture the wonder of the outdoors on a canvass.
When I was fourteen, I found blacksmithing on youtube. My initial reaction was ‘holy shit that’s so cool I want to do that so bad!’ And so I did. My first forge was a pit I dug in my backyard, my first bellows was the exhaust of a shop-vac, and my first anvil was a big rock. Was this dangerous? Yes. Am I still alive? Yes. Am I still making knives? Obviously. Since then, I’ve slowly collected tools, built a proper propane forge, and have a shop just outside Livingston near Carter’s Bridge.
Knives
Over the past eight years, I have refined my craft to create knives honed for function and style. I use the design and aesthetic sense I gained from so many years of painting to create balanced and stylish designs, and the years of practice in the hard skills specific to knife making to ensure every knife performs the best it possibly can.
Jewelry
My interest in jewelry formed more recently. It’s a bit of a call back to my origins as a painter. Because I don’t have to limit the artistic drive in order to ensure function, I can treat each design as a little wearable sculpture. It’s also an excuse to play around more with my favorite material, copper. Here, I mess around with texture, abstraction, and boldness: heat colored-copper coin-like tassel earrings, damascus steel pendants and cat-eye earrings. My jewelry is fresh, hand-crafted, and long-lasting.
